Stone Bridge - April 2025
It is with great pleasure and happiness that the iconic stone Bridge at Deene Park has been subject to some emergency restoration. Our thanks go to the Historic Houses Foundation who have assisted us with a grant.
It was built at some stage in the Eighteenth Century using the stones and balustrade of the old Catholic Chapel on the East Side of Deene Park. Nothing is ever wasted and the balustrade from around the House was used in the construction of the Bridge.
Taken from the 1745 map by Brasier showing the original position of the stone balustrade.
A pontoon was installed to allow specialist firm Brown & Shaw access to the arches to repair the weathered stones by injecting a resin-like substance to form new grout between the stones.
We can now continue to welcome visitors to the House from the Porters Lodge entrance, and as they sweep alongside the lake the wonderful view of the Bridge with Deene Park sitting majestically behind it comes into sight. It has become a favourite place for our wedding couples to pose for pictures on their wedding day.
The Bridge has also received publicity after featuring in the popular film ‘Saltburn’, starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, and Richard E. Grant.
