Conservation Cleaning in the White Hall
Preparations are well underway here at Deene Park to welcome visitors once more to this historic House. After all the building works that have taken place over the past few years, our attention has turned to the cleaning of The White Hall. With the new skylight erected and the great height of the room, this has been no mean feat and we looked to the best specialists to help us.
The White Hall had a high level conservation clean by London-based specialist cleaning company Virtu Conservation Housekeeping (www.conservation-housekeeping.co.uk). Christopher and Sasha from Virtu stayed on site during this major undertaking to remove dust and dirt using specialist equipment.
The White Hall was built to provide access to the first floor by the 5th Earl of Cardigan (1725 – 1811). This large, richly decorated room is full of historic items on display as well as several portraits and a very large picture by James Sant, which commemorates the occasion in January 1855 when Lord Cardigan, having been home from the Crimea for only three days, was summoned by the Queen to stay at Windsor. The paintings have large, ornate frames that have become dull over time.
Cleaning the Frames
The frames were gently cleaned using pony hair and badger hair brushes, and low suction vacuuming. As the frames were observed to be quite dry and surfaces prone to flaking – some losses were remedied whilst on site using Paraloid B72, a conservation-grade reversible adhesive.
The cleaning of the plaster frieze was carried out using soft brushes with low/medium suction vacuuming. The material surface of the frieze was fairly robust so flaking was minimal during the cleaning process.
In addition, the brass wall sconces were cleaned and the glass globes washed before the team turned their specialist skills to the marble and bronze busts, the large Turkish carpet and bookcases.
All in all, a mammoth task, and we are most grateful to Virtu for giving us back that sparkling clean gleam!
